1983 BMW R80RT

I'm coming up on the three year aniversary of buying my R80 and I really hate to do it, but I know that if I were to start fixing it up, I'd end up spending twice the market value of the bike getting it the way I want it. Right now, I simply can't afford that. It's better for the bike that it goes to someone who has the resources to do that.

I never expected to like the bike as much as I did. I also never expected to find one of the best "marque club" support networks around in this mailing list. You folks are exactly the opposite of what I'd always heard BMW riders to be like, the "airheads" are helpful, knowledgable and willing to get your hands dirty working on the machines.

Apart from a couple of problems, it is basically sound, though it is not pretty cosmetically. I had thought about fixing it up, but the way it is, I can ride it to San Francisco and park it without worrying overmuch about it being stolen, which makes it a lot better (for me) as basic transportation.

Problems: The tranny needs work. First gear "slips a dog" intermittently. The exhaust should be welded up, or replaced. I've got a low tech patch on it, which works OK from a noise perspective, but it's not "right". http://red4est.red4est.com/lrc/pix/sellr80rt/PICT2554N.jpg

It got blown over in a windstorm thanksgiving of 2001. I made the mistake of parking it on the centerstand with the bike cover on it. It damaged the faring a bit: http://red4est.red4est.com/lrc/pix/sellr80rt/PICT2557N.jpg

The seat doesn't lock, or lock well.

When I bought it, it didn't have the lower half of the faring on, I never put it on myself, though I have the pieces. I took the windshield off when I took it up to Thunderhill, and decided I liked it better that way, it gets better mileage and is more comfortable on warm days. I have all the bits and pieces: http://red4est.red4est.com/lrc/pix/sellr80rt/PICT2543N.jpg http://red4est.red4est.com/lrc/pix/sellr80rt/PICT2541N.jpg

The VIN is WB1044809D6172978

The only major fix I've done to the bike was taking the speedo to Palo Alto Speedometer. The odometer was intermittent, so I brought it in for repair and calibration.

I tried taking pictures of all the relevant details, but my digital camera is a POS. The pictures are at: http://red4est.red4est.com/lrc/pix/sellr80rt/ The hi res versions are at: http://red4est.red4est.com/lrc/pix/sellr80rt/bigpix

I've decided that I need to get $2000 for the bike. If you're interested, or potentially interested, drop me a note and we'll see what we can work out.

There are times I really hate "growing up" and realizing that my resources are finite, and if I try to do everything I want to do, I won't finish any of it.

Pictures taken last summer at a Keigwin's track day at Thunderhill.
